Getting married on Santorini, minus the guesswork
Three ways to hold a Santorini wedding, and only two of them are legal in Greece. The paperwork runs eight to twelve weeks, the license lasts six months, and the windiest place you could choose is also the one most couples ask for first. Here is the whole clock, and the honest cost of it.
Three ceremonies, and only two of them are marriages
Every quote you receive will assume one of three things, and almost none of them will say which. A civil ceremony is conducted by a municipal official and is a legal marriage in Greece and everywhere that recognizes Greece. A Greek Orthodox ceremony is equally legal, but at least one of you must be baptised Orthodox and the church asks for its own documents on top of the civil set. A symbolic ceremony has no Greek paperwork behind it and no legal standing at all.
The vows do not know the difference. The registrar does.
None of that makes symbolic the lesser option. It makes it a different decision, taken on purpose: the island holds the meaning, your own country holds the file. What it must never be is the thing you discover afterwards, and it is the single most common surprise on this island.
Eight to twelve weeks, and the license outlives it
This is the part that decides your date, and it is the part planners tend to describe as “we handle the paperwork.” Someone does handle it. It still takes this long.

Once issued, the license is valid for six months, which is the one generous number in the whole process. There is no residency requirement and no waiting period, so nobody has to arrive early and sit on the island to qualify. The pressure is entirely at the front of the clock, not the back.
Documents to the municipality two months before the date
That last figure, along with the requirement that a single-status letter be issued within three months of the wedding and the note that the Greek marriage certificate arrives three to four weeks afterwards, comes from a Santorini planner's own published practice rather than from statute. Treat it as how this island actually runs, and confirm it against the municipality for your date.
The wind is the variable nobody prices
Ask any planner for the most beautiful ceremony spot on Santorini and a good number will name the lighthouse at Akrotiri. In our own location file it scores five out of five for exposure — the highest on the island. The caldera by boat scores four. Anything airborne scores four.
That is not an argument against any of them. It is an argument for deciding, in advance and in writing, what happens if the meltemi is up on your date: which walls you move behind, whose hair and hem it affects, and who makes the call and when. A wedding has a fixed start time and a room full of people already seated, which is exactly why the plan B has to exist before the morning.
If you would rather not have that conversation at all, the calm end of the same file is unambiguous: Firostefani, Fira, Pyrgos, the Three Blue Domes viewpoint, Ammoudi, the south-coast beaches and private villas all sit at two out of five. Only one setting on the island scores a single point, and it is an enclosed dinner venue.
And note which word does not appear in that list. A private caldera terrace scores three — windier than the beaches, windier than Fira. Private describes who can see you, not what the wind is doing to your hair at seven in the evening, and the two get confused in almost every enquiry we answer.
All fifteen locations are scored for exposure, privacy and sunset, and the scores do not change because a date is worth money.
What the island charges, and what we will not do
The published market for a Santorini wedding in 2026 runs from roughly €9,000 for an elopement to €60,000 and beyond for a full celebration. Venue rental typically lands between €2,000 and €5,000, with exclusive caldera venues reaching €12,000 to €14,000. Planning sits between €1,500 and €5,000. Photography and film together run €2,500 to €5,000. Catering starts around €100 a head.
Those are market figures. Ours are published separately, and they are lower down the page than most. Our wedding packages start at €2,900 for the two of you, €5,400 up to twenty guests and €12,000 for a full production — and each of those floors buys our work: the planning, the coordination, the styling, the coverage.
Venue hire and catering are quoted separately, at cost. That split is the whole reason a floor can be honest. Venue alone runs from about €2,000 for a straightforward setting to €12,000 or €14,000 for exclusive use of a caldera property, so a single headline that folds it in is not cheaper — it is less legible, and you would find out which one you had bought at the point of signing.
What we will not do is quote a headline that omits the venue, the coordinator's day rate, or the fact that a caldera terrace bills per person after twenty. If a number arrives without the thing it excludes written next to it, ask the question again.
If the wedding is not the reason you came

The questions that decide the date
How far ahead do we actually need to start the paperwork?
Eight to twelve weeks from first document to license in hand, and that assumes nothing goes back for a correction. Gathering certificates at home takes two to six weeks, apostilles one to three, certified translation one to two, and the municipal review another one to two. A Santorini planner we cross-checked asks for everything two months before the date. Start at four months and the clock stops being the thing you worry about.
Is a symbolic ceremony a lesser wedding?
It is a different transaction, not a smaller one. Symbolic means no Greek paperwork and no legal standing, so the vows, the setting and the people are identical while the legal marriage happens at home. Couples who want the island to hold the meaning and their own country to hold the file choose it deliberately. If you want the marriage itself to be Greek, you want the civil route.
Does the apostille apply to us?
If your documents were issued outside the EU, yes, on every government-issued paper except your passports. EU-issued documents have been exempt since 2020. The apostille is a stamp that tells a Greek registrar your birth certificate is genuine, and it is issued by the same government that issued the certificate, not by anyone here.

Each floor covers our work rather than the venue, and venue and catering are quoted separately at cost.
Can we propose and marry on the same trip?
Symbolically, yes, and that is a route we have written out in full elsewhere. Legally, no: the license alone takes seven to ten working days after a municipal review that itself follows apostilles and translations. The trip that ends in a legal Greek marriage is the second trip, or a first trip planned three months in advance.
